Recommendations on Imports of Fresh Produce

Dear Friends and Customers,

To preserve the integrity and good condition of your goods, even when these are unloaded at the Mexican and US Customs, and to give greater fluidity to your shipments, we would like to share the following recommendations:

  • If your product comes with ice, make sure to use special and resistant packaging, since we have seen pallets tilt due to soften carton caused by the melted ice.
  • Have a sample(s) of your product on hand, in some occasions this could be the only portion inspected, thus avoiding movement of pallets. Make sure that these samples have the same size and packing characteristics as those contained in the general shipment.
  • Remember that during the summer, CBP allows a closed door on trucks. If within 20 minutes you have not been taken care of at the dock, you can ask a CBP or USDA Officer to assist you. Your driver can also contact our customs dispatchers or contact us by phone for any support needed.
  • US importers please notify our Import Department in advance if you authorize to prepare import documents for a new Mexican Exporter at compliance.clx@rljones.com. This protects your Bond and prevents any unauthorized document processing.
  • To avoid shipment rejection from USDA, please remember there is zero tolerance for soil presence in products also for non certified pallets. All pallets must have a visible seal.
  • It is recommended to use plastic nets along with the adjusted plastic belts and corners (especially when using small boxes) so that the pallets do not tilt.
  • If you are currently using printed or labeled cartons make sure the description matches the product you are importing, if not, be sure to cover with labels. Confusing information on packaging that does not match merchandise can lead to shipment delays.
  • We recommend scheduling your imports during the morning since traffic is less heavy.
  • Remember to use the ITACS tool to verify if your goods have been released by FDA.
  • When applicable, original Phytosanitary should always be carried by the driver.
  • Contact us for any questions at compliance.clx@rljones.com and we will gladly assist you.
